WE BELIEVE THAT
JESUS IS THE WAY
TO CHANGED LIVES
to see men live into the fullness of the call that God has placed on their life. We do this by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ while putting HIS love in action via our evangelistic ministry and through discipleship and mentorship in our aftercare program. Our long term goal is to increase our ability to support these men as they grow in their relationship Lord and to be support them as they work to heal family relationships.
Jesse and Edith Mathes started serving in prison ministries in 1977, out of the office
in his house. The ministry was later moved to a small space in Champaign, and then
to a larger space next to the Virginia Theatre and finally in 1997 to its present location
at the old Holiday Inn motel in Rantoul, Illinois.
The Holiday Inn had been closed after Chanute Air Force Base was shuttered in
the early 1990s. The Holiday Inn motel was an answer to prayer as it was sold to
Jesus is the Way Ministries was given to the ministry in 1996.
The Holiday Inn motel, now known as the Jesus Inn, was in need of work,
but again "Praise God" Jesse had a background in construction and
wasn't hindered by the work ahead.
Jesse, Edith and their family continued to faithfully serve the mission and men
of Jesus is the Way Ministries until the day he passed into glory in 2008. Edith has
since retired, but their daughter Tammi still serves on the board of directors for JITW
and Brenda serves as the administrative assistant.
By God's grace the work Jesse began in 1977 continues today as the lives of men are
transformed by the power of Jesus Christ. Today, the prison ministry can house 11 people
in 11 rooms, and God isn't even done yet...
To reduce the recidivism rate of male offenders by minimizing the cases of criminality directly related to substance
abuse and other related dysfunctions, by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ while putting HIS love in action via
our evangelistic ministry and aftercare program. Our long term goal is to increase our ability to support these men
and to be able to focus on healing family relationships.
